Welcome to Bio Base Europe, a leading initiative for the development of the biobased economy in Europe. Bio Base Europe is a joint initiative of Ghent Bio-Energy Valley and BioPark Terneuzen.

The biobased economy is strongly developing today and we are in the midst of a transition from an economy based on fossil resources to a biobased economy based on renewable resources. In order to help that transition, Europe, Belgium and the Netherlands have united their forces to establish Bio Base Europe within the framework of an ambitious Interreg project. Bio Base Europe is currently building research and training facilities for the biobased economy with an overall budget of 21 M€.

The Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant is a flexible and diversified pilot plant based in Ghent, Belgium, capable of scaling up and optimising a broad variety of biobased processes up to the 10 m3 pilot scale. It is a one-stop-shop that can perform the entire value chain in a single plant, from the green resources up to the final product. The Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant is operating according to an open innovation service model. Companies and research institutes that are active in the biobased economy can rent these facilities for their technological development needs.

The Bio Base Europe Training Center is a training facility for process operators in various biobased industries and is based in Terneuzen, The Netherlands. It contains various educational equipment and training installations and is operating according to an open education model. Companies as well as schools can rent these facilities for tailor-made training programs of their personnel or students.

Bio Base Europe is an important building block for the development of a sustainable biobased economy in Europe. This research and training infrastructure is expected to improve the economic growth, innovation capacity and sustainable development of our society.
